A few years ago, I was totally convinced that orange would never suit me. As a matter of fact, I would have rather worn a bin liner than donned this tangerine hue. But, lo and behold: I simply hadn't found the right orange for me!
Today I share with you my tips on how to style orange and show you this tangerine dream dress from Honey and Beau*
Find The Right Orange Tone For Your Skin Tone
This heading probably looks like I'm screaming at you through some sort of monstrous megaphone, but I seriously need to put across this point! When you style orange, you need to find that luscious shade that was practically invented to be draped across your skin. Each skin tone, hair colour and eye colour has an orange shade that will look totally babin' on them.I recommend you try before you buy, but the following list will help you find the right orange for your skin tone.
- Very fair skin: Opt for Autumnal oranges such as burnt orange, rust and oranges that are more towards burgundy.
- Slightly tanned skin: Orangey red or tangelo is made for your skin tone! Coral is wonderful for you too.
- Olive skin: Keep it on the pink or red side of the orange spectrum, more brown shades can wash you out.
- Dark skin: You lovely ladies can rock any orange in all its vibrancy!
As you can see, my dress is more on the fire-y side of things! Gotta love tangelo (yep: I totally learnt that word today!)
Use Dark, Contrasting Accessories
Colour contrasting is always a win, in my books. But as orange is such a vivid colour, styling it with something on the exact opposite of the spectrum (bright blue) may look as brash as the cast of Jordie Shore.
Instead, style orange with dark navy accessories, they will tone the bright tones, whilst adding a more sophisticated contrast.
Match With An Orange Lipstick
A strong orange lip has been on my radar for seasons, but there is something super appealing when you style orange clothes with a lipstick in a similar shade. Whether you opt for a cute coral or a tasty tangerine, an orange lip is always a win-win!
Tone Down With Nudes
When it comes to shoes, choose a neutral pair! Orange hues are made to be the centre of attention and attempting to attract attention to your shoes and other accessories may look a little bit too over the top.
Opt For Minimal
Let's be honest: my outfit today is enough to make proper minimalists cover their eyes and scream. Nonetheless, when you style orange, a less is more approach is vital! Keep jewellery clean, neutral and minimal.
