As thirty starts to loom in the corner like an eagle ready to strike at the mouse of my mid-twenties, I find myself becoming more and more infatuated with chic minimalist looks.
However, because of my beach-y, tropical lifestyle, I will always be a boho-loving girl too. Rather than flipping backwards and forwards between styles, I decided to combine them in something that I can only describe as 'minimalist boho'.
So Rachel, how exactly do I rock the minimalist and boho trends at the same time?
I'm glad you asked! Here's how...
Playsuit: Seven Wonders The Label
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff
Sunglasses: Xlyvester Madrid*
Mules: ASOS
Earrings: Lovisa (identical here)
Before I get into the nitty gritty of how to style minimalist boho, I have to tell you the story of this sublime Rebecca Minkoff Micro Bag:
As I picked up the bag in the photos above, I probably looked like one of those Looney Toones sketches were the heart leaps out of their chest like a kukoo clock. Seeing my face and discovering that the price tag wasn't even a tenth as hideous as the Gucci bags I normally drool over, Jake exclaimed that he was buying it for an anniversary present. (Side note: this was in November, our anniversary was the end of January).
It just so happens that the local radio station were there and everyone that made a purchase was entered into a prize draw. We thought we'd give it a go, so we went and had a chat to the presenters, and Jake explained that it was an anniversary present. They obviously didn't get the message that our anniversary was still two months away.
Whilst I was sniffing away at various perfumes, a promo member came and told us we had won and we had to go to the team who were doing a live broadcast downstairs. We thought they were gonna make us talk, but thankfully the microphones were broken. They must of predicted that I would sound like a pre-pubescent twelve year old boy.
So we just stood there awkwardly, whilst they did their spiel. It went along the lines of: "And the winner is Jake and Rachel. Funny story here, Jake actually FORGOT it was their anniversary, so he made it up to her by buying a designer handbag."
So yep: boyfie was shamed as the worlds worst man, when he had actually bought it for me two months prior to the big day! HAHAHA
Fin.
How To Style Minimalist Boho
Ah minimalist boho: the definition of a fashion oxymoron! Styling it up is all about taking shapes and details that tick the boho boxes, but keeping the color palette plain and free of fussy patterns.
When looking for pieces, go for off-shoulder pieces, flow-y shapes or typical bohemian cuts. Juxtapose the cut by keeping the colour scheme nude or monochrome, then add polished accessories such as my Gucci-style loafers.
Another trick is to take a boho-style piece and let it do the talking by itself. When styling boho, it's all too easy to layer on lashings of accessories. But sometimes, if you want a more polished look, it's important to step back and consider if the piece really needs it.
