Go to your kitchen, grab a cheese grater and voila: a brand new wardrobe staple!
Fringe hem jeans and embroidered loafers have been on my lust list since they first popped up on my Pinterest.
Instead of forking out thousands on the must-have Gucci numbers, I opted for this gorgeous $40 Boohoo pair.
As for the jeans, well **cough cough** all it took was a cheese grater.
Yes: I'm serious.
These DIY fringe hem jeans are a reincarnation of an old pair of denims that I hacked up with a cheese grater.
Ready to make your own grate jeans? (Sorry, I had to!)
Read on for a tutorial on how to create these DIY fringe hem jeans and see how I styled mine up oh-so-street-style worthy with these floral embroidered loafers
Loafers: Boohoo
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff
Sunglasses: Prada
Shirt: An old white shirt that I pulled down off the shoulders
Surely I'm not the only one that attaches emotions and memories to certain pieces of clothing?
These jeans are a prime example. Having bought them on my working holiday abroad in the USA, they have slowly been accumulating dust at the back of my wardrobe. Every time I go to do a clear out, they somehow magically ricochet from my 'donate' pile and back into their prime dusty spot.
Rather than throwing away the jeans I bought at Forever 21 in Santa Monica (USA readers, don't laugh! Forever 21 wasn't existent in the UK and Forever 21 in the epitome of American), I decided to give them a sexy make over so that I'd actually wear them again.
After a cheeky trip to the cheese grater, my Forever 21 DIY fringe hem jeans are hot and ready for 2017!
I apologize for the lack of photos of my actually creating the jeans. After receiving so many messages in response to me grating my jeans on Instagram story to create these, I thought I'd give you a step by step guide on how to create these DIY fringe hem jeans.
In attempt to look like someone from the Milan glam pack, I styled them with these drool-worthy floral embroidered loafers.
DIY Fringe Hem Jeans Tutorial
Warning: Please wear gloves, I found out the hard way and my poor fingertips ended up a little grated.
I'd write an inventory list for this tutorial, but everything you need for this DIY fringe hem jeans tutorial is quite literally sitting in your kitchen pantry. Without further adieu, get thee to the kitchen to find a cheese grater and a pair of scissors. Oh yes.. you also need an old pair of denim jeans.
Note: This could blunt your cheese grater. I used the smallest grater size, cos who on earth wants small pieces of cheese?!
Done? Great. Here's a brie-f diagram to help you in your DIY:
- Grab your scissors and simply cut off the hems on the bottom of the jeans.
- Cut the front half of the jeans approximately one inch smaller than the back. (See A)
- Grab the front layer of your jeans and place the bottom inch of denim inside down on the cheese grater and grate downwards in one direction. (See B)
- Keep going until you have distressed the bottom inch of the jeans.
- Pull out the horizontal wefts to create fringes.
- Repeat on the back layer of the denim.
- Repeat on the other leg.
